Here’s What You Should Actually Eat to Get Rid of Your Hangover

As you struggle to lift your head off the pillow, you tend to realize that the ninth Cuervo shot you downed last night was a bad choice. With the feeling of a wrecking ball smashing into your skull, your hangover can turn you into a useless blob for an entire day. The “perfect” cure for a hangover usually results in shoveling down the greasiest, grossest form of food you can find, like an overflowing breakfast sandwich.
But is that actually what you should be chomping down on? Science says otherwise.
Studies have shown that its really a lack of electrolytes that tend to exacerbate your post-drinking pain, which explains why we believe eating anything will make you feel better as long as it comes with several gulps of Gatorade and a couple Advil. Resorting to a heavy meal on its own won’t always mitigate the effects of alcohol, however, due to the fact that it’s serious lacking in any nutritional value. The grease from your diner dish actually tends to upset your stomach, making matters worse. In fact, your best bet would be to consume that extra greasy meal for dinner pre-partying, so your stomach has a solid lining that’ll prevent you from overdoing it out on the town.
For an actual edible cure, we certainly recommend sticking with a sports drink like Gatorade that will quickly replenish both electrolytes and blood sugar. But instead of relying grease to replenish your body (and dignity), try these more efficient alternatives to handle your hangover needs.
- Pickles
- Cheese
- Banana
- Coconut Water
- Avocados
- Mixed Nuts
- Peanut Butter
- Whole Grain Crackers/Pretzels
When you’re looking to detox after that debaucherous night, remember to play up food items with a long list of nutrients to get you out of bed and hangover-free. There’s no better cure for regret than a well-balanced fruit smoothie. And hey, once you’re recovered, go enjoy that bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. It may not help your body, but it’s damn good for the soul.
