Blacktop Mojo In Tampa

Everyone knows I am huge music fan, and I love nothing more than going to see some kick ass live music. Friday night I checked out Blacktop Mojo. Some of you may be asking yourself who the hell is that? Others that know me, know what a big fan I am of this band who I was turned onto last year.

Rewind to August of 2017, and I was speaking to Tom G., the bands publicist who at the time I had just met, but he said to me, “You have to check out this band called Blacktop Mojo.” He sent me the record and told me to listen to their version of “Dream On”. As the song started I thought to myself they were doing an awesome job, but it came down to the ending and how the singer could pull off the high notes.. My reaction was holy shit! He fucking nailed it! I was blown away and I spent the next couple weeks listening to their album “Burn The Ships”. I was hooked.

Over the past year or so I have been following them on their social media and watching various covers on YouTube and thinking this band is doing it right. As a guy who does marketing, and social media I was intrigued to what they were doing differently. In an industry that has completely changed from the days of being a kick ass band and playing and touring your ass off to touring and using social media to help gain new fans. They just kept growing. The Dream On video kept getting more traction and I watched their fan base continue. The dedication these guys had was fantastic. It’s pretty rare for a band these days to really understand this world and these guys seem to “get it”.

Friday I got to speak with their singer, Matt James, and talk about the industry, their influences, opening for Bon Jovi, and the success the band has achieved so far. (You can check out the interview here at www.2unemployedradioguys.com) Then it was time to watch this band perform. From the first note to the end of the show these guys just fucking killed it! High energy, head banging, kick ass playing and incredible musicianship. I hadn’t seen a rock show like this in a long time. I loved it! Even watching them do some acoustic covers mid set was cool. They went into the audience and sat down on the floor and played their version of “In the Air Tonight” and it was so good as the crowd sang along with them. Hearing them pull out the cover of Steve Ray Vaughan’s “Life by the Drop” was a nice touch.

If you have not checked these guys out, do yourself a favor and subscribe to their YouTube channel, follow them on Instagram and like them on Facebook. I promise that you will dig them and wonder how you haven’t heard of them yet..

I truly believe this band is going to be the next big fucking rock band very soon. They have it. Not to mention all of the guys are super nice with absolutely no ego. Best of luck to these guys.
