Backing tracks have become a normal part of modern rock shows — orchestration, keyboards, backing vocals, effects, and sometimes even reinforcement of the musicians onstage. But where does it cross the line?
What happens when backing tracks start replacing the actual performance? And if the singer or musicians aren’t really performing what you’re hearing, are you still getting the live show you paid for?
I’d rather hear a singer miss a note or a guitar player screw something up than hear a perfect prerecorded performance. Those imperfections are part of what makes live music live.
